| Widely regarded as the most beautiful and romantic harbour on the mainland side of the Solent, the timeless, 12 mile long Beaulieu River is unusual because it is privately owned by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. Starting near Lyndhusrt in the New Forest, the river flows through the forest heaths to the village of Beaulieu where the river becomes tidal. It continues through the forest to the historic ship building village of Buckler's Hard, before continuing to the sea, through the Solent, where the entrance to the river is marked by the Millennium Beacon.
Most of the river is accessible to small craft at high tide, making it ideal for a Solent rib charter, but a 5 knot speed limit applies along the length of the river, so it would be a very pleasant cruise and not a white knuckle ride. There are a large number of moorings in the river, an anchorage opposite Gull Island, and a marina at Buckler's Hard between them provide ample berthing for your Solent yacht charter, but be aware that the entrance to the river can be tricky, and should not be attempted at low tide.
Apart from the river itself, the main visitor attractions are:
The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu
Buckler's Hard, which due to its maritime history (including building warships for Nelson's fleet), museum, authentic reconstruction of 18th Century life and comprehensive facilities for yachts and yachtsmen is a fascinating place to visit, and you'd be in very good company. Sir Francis Chichester who was the first person to sail single-handedly around the world in his Gipsy Moth IV made Buckler's Hard his home port, and you are be able to see some exhibits relating to this.
Other places of interest include:
Palace House, Beaulieu Abbey, Riverside Walk, Exbury Gardens.
For food and drink, you probably won't want to look much further than the
